In a note sent to the Lusa agency, the Independent Union of All United Nurses (SITEU) explained that the strike was “called off following the availability of the Minister of Health to begin negotiations”.

The strike was scheduled for the 26th, 29th and 30th of April and the 2nd and 3rd of May and covered public service institutions and those in the social and private sectors of the continent and the autonomous regions of the Azores and Madeira, on a regional basis depending on the days.

The reason given for the strike was the salary and career review and hiring of more professionals and the strike also served for nurses to demand the negotiation of collective labor agreements in the private and social sectors, defining salary tables never lower than those practiced in the National Service of health.

Nurses also ask for a “fair, transparent and enforceable” evaluation and performance model, measures that recognize and minimize risk, as well as the wear and tear of the profession and the integration of nurses with precarious contracts into public, private and social services.

The strike had been called by the National Nurses Union (SNE), the Nurses Union (SE), the Independent Union of Nursing Professionals (SIPENF), the Independent Union of All United Nurses (SITEU) and the Democratic Union of Nurses of Portugal ( SINDEPOR).

The last strike by nurses took place on March 15, called by the Portuguese Nurses Union (SEP).
