As part of the application to the Administrative Modernization Support System (SAMA) “DIR@2020 – Dematerialize, Integrate and Robotize”, the Medical Device Reprocessing Unit (URDM) of the Viseu Dão Lafões Local Health Unit (ULSVDL) took an important step to optimize its processes, by implementing a management and traceability solution for surgical instruments, informs the hospital center.

“The Sterilization Center now has a computer installation that modernizes the way in which medical devices are managed and monitored throughout the sterilization cycle” says a statement, adding that “this innovation not only optimizes the management of surgical instruments, but also dematerializes checklists and improves the management of user services, as well as the traceability of washing, inspection, packaging and sterilization processes”.

The same informative note explains that “before the implementation of this solution, the management of surgical instruments was carried out manually, based on paper support. This process depended largely on the experience of the professionals at the Sterilization Center and made it difficult to access updated information on the availability of instruments, making the replacement of surgical boxes quick and complete. The new solution introduces functionalities for managing and creating the compositions of instrument boxes, including the identification of all articles, in addition to enabling personalized management of URDM machines and the traceability of all medical devices. These improvements are reflected in the quality of management and effective reporting of all processes, directly contributing to the level of service available to ULSVDL’s surgical activity”.

The Hospital Center also highlights that the “dematerialization of processes, in addition to allowing the integrated management of all instruments in the URDM facilities, results in a reduction in context costs and in the proactive management of incidents in the reprocessing of devices, which is intended to reflect in increasing the safety, effectiveness and performance of surgical activities, reinforcing ULSVDL’s commitment to excellence in the provision of health services”, it can be read.
