Little Moons: viral mochis with ice cream filling have arrived in Portugal
The brand that reinvented the classic Japanese sweet is a global phenomenon. It is finally on sale in national stores.
The TikTok gastronomic phenomenon has already arrived in Portugal.
More than 180 million Little Moons are manufactured every year. The brand with the same name, created in 2010 by brothers Howard and Vivien Wong, sought to reinvent the famous mochis, sweet cakes made with glutinous rice and red bean paste filling.
The beans ended up being replaced by artisanal ice creams of different flavors — and success was immediate. The British brand now sells cakes andm more than 20 countries. Portugal is the most recent name on this list. The hashtag with the brand’s name already has more than 24 million mentions on TikTok, a network where they have become a phenomenon thanks to their vibrant colors.
“A deliciously sweet, soft and chewy rice flour dough. This dough is steamed, punched and delicately wrapped around a ball of ice cream, as if it were a soft and comfortable coat on a cold day”, explains the brand about its creation.
They are also recommended for a vegetarian diet. The composition does not include any dyes, preservatives, flavorings or gluten — and each unit has just 85 calories.
Passion fruit and mango, raspberry, coconut, Belgian chocolate and hazelnut, and roasted pistachio with honey are just some of the flavors you can try in boxes of six for €5.99. Little Moons are on sale in commercial areas such as El Corte Inglés, Continente, Auchan and Apolónia supermarkets.
