The President of the Republic, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, cut ties with his son due to the case of the Portuguese-Brazilian twins treated at Santa Maria Hospital, reported the Brazilian newspaper Correio Braziliense.

Nuno Rebelo de Sousa approached him to speed up the four million euro treatment of children, with the drug Zolgensma for spinal muscular atrophy.

“It’s unforgivable, because he knows that I have a public and political position, and I pay for it. There are worse things in life. I don’t know if he will be held responsible. I don’t care. That’s one of the advantages of cutting yourself,” he said. Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa.

The relationship between the two was already tense, but the twins’ case precipitated their total separation. “He is 51 years old. If he were my oldest and favorite grandson, aged 20, I would feel co-responsible. But, at 51 years old, he is older and vaccinated”, said the President of the Republic.

In October 2019, the Presidency received an email from Nuno Rebelo de Sousa regarding the treatment of the Portuguese-Brazilian twins. At the time, the head of state was close to undergoing heart surgery and put the case aside. The Civil House considered it impossible to interfere.

The case became public in November. “It was necessary to resort to technology to recover the messages [trocadas com o filho]. I didn’t remember the twins,” she claimed.

Days earlier, António Costa, targeted in ‘Operation Influencer’, resigned from his position as prime minister. “I consoled him about his case and he consoled me about the twins’ case,” he said.

The children accessed treatment irregularly, the General Inspection of Health Activities confirmed this month.
