After several days with temperatures above average for the time of year, but also with showers, thunderstorms and hail, a sudden change in weather is expected soon that will make mainland Portugal “return to winter”. What is at stake? Alfredo Graça, specialist at Meteored Portugal (tempo.pt), launches the weather forecast in Portugal for the next few days.

The “unseasonable heat” that prevailed for much of this month of April is about to say goodbye thanks to the imminent change in weather, related to the arrival of a cold depression coming from Greenland.

This isolated cold depression, associated with a maritime polar air mass, will soon form south of Greenland and travel rapidly across the Atlantic until reaching mainland Portugal next Friday, April 26.

Before that, this Thursday, the first “signs” of the imminent change in the weather state are beginning to be felt: a first front associated with this depression will leave periods of rain in areas of the North and Center, not to mention the fall of temperatures.

Is Sancho depression lurking?

It is expected that the cold depression coming from Greenland (possibly Sancho) reaches mainland Portugal next Friday (26)producing rain with greater intensity and abundance during periods of late and from the night and, above all, in regions located west of the Condensation Barrier (districts of Viana do Castelo, Braga, Harbor, Aveiro and western areas of the districts of Real Village It is Viseu).

It will snow at the highest points of Serra da Estrela and, at the end of the day, in points in the extreme north from 1200 meters above sea level.

Beyond this, the weather will get even colder and the southwest wind will increase in intensitycontributing to an unstable and rainy panorama in the North and Center of the continent’s geography, generally north of the Montejunto-Estrela mountain system.

Precipitation will also occur south of the aforementioned geographical feature, but it will be weak, dispersed and not very uniform.

Last weekend of April with rain and possible snowfall, thunderstorms and hail

For the early hours and morning of Saturday (27), a meteorological situation of rain is expected to continue, worsened by a further drop in temperatures, which will result in snowfall until mid-morning in the mountainous areas of the North and Center above 1200 meters of altitude.

There will be risk of thunderstorms and the possibility of hail or uvapel cannot be excluded in some parts of the country, namely in plateau surfaces of the Northeast Trás-os-Montes. The weather will be a little less severe in the afternoon.

For Sunday (28) a temporary alleviation of weather conditions is expected, but in the afternoon new precipitation and snowfall are expected.
