The Prime Minister, Luís Montenegro, will lay the first stone of the Esposende City Park, next Sunday, at 10:30 am.

The moment will be marked on the street of Ponte D. Luís Filipe, in Gandra.

As O MINHO reported, Esposende launched, at the beginning of this year, the public tender for the construction of Parque da Cidade with a base value of 6.5 million euros.

“This is an intervention in the area located on the right bank of the Cávado river, as a corollary of some interventions, already completed, to requalify the marginal urban front of the city of Esposende, in a logic of continuity of paths aimed at valuing these spaces for the life and recreation of the population, enabling pedestrian and cycling access, with identity, integrated, particularly in the coastal and Cávado ecovia network”, reads the notice opening the competition.

The mayor, Benjamim Pereira, considers this to be “a structuring project for the municipality and the region”.

“This project corresponds to a year-old desire and will finally be fulfilled, having overcome several stages of a lengthy and, in some way, exhausting process, which is why this moment in which we take this step towards the its execution”, highlighted the mayor.

Benjamim Pereira highlighted that the municipality was assuming “this large investment in full”, although he was hopeful that the project could receive some type of financing.

“Still, given the importance and added value of this intervention, which will give a new image to the city’s riverside area, we intend to move forward with the project with resources exclusively from the municipality”, the statement also read.

The deadline for carrying out the work is one year.

The Esposende City Park will result in an intervention to requalify the southern part of the riverside area, with a view to providing the riverfront with a “more harmonious and integrated” urban image.

It will consist of pedestrian and cycling paths, in conjunction with the ecovias of the North Coast and Cávado, and will have spaces for outdoor events related to the river and the practice of informal sports, environmental interpretation posts and birdwatching points, picnic park, public toilets, recreational equipment and urban furniture.

The area to be intervened is around 30 hectares, including the extension to the south bank and including the construction of a pedestrian and cycle bridge over the Cávado river and the requalification of almost all the surrounding roads, which will appear in later phases.
