Thousands of people in downtown Lisbon and in other cities across the country to mark 50 years of the 25th of April. A celebration marked by partisan speeches that accentuated political polarization.

An example of this is the proposal to commemorate the 25th of November, defended by the right, or the reparation of costs associated with the Portuguese colonial past, defended by Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa two days ago, in his speech at the solemn session at the Assembly of the Republic. The President of the Republic said that the scale of the April 28th Revolution is unmatched by any other movement in the country.

“It is unfair to compare the incomparable, to forget the global costs of what we experienced and even the costs of the revolution that only existed because the dictatorship did not know how or did not want to make a transition. Unlike its Spanish neighbor”, said the Portuguese head of state.

Brazil has already asked for concrete actions after Marcelo’s words. At the end of the day, the President of Timor-Leste and Portuguese-speaking African countries participates in a session commemorating the 50th anniversary of the 25th of April.

Around three dozen Guinean activists gathered today in front of the Assembly of the Republic. It was a protest against the presence of the President of Guinea in these celebrations of the 50th anniversary of the 25th of April.
