Joana Amaral Dias, ADN candidate for the European elections, was booed and insulted at the 25th of April celebrations in Terreiro do Paço. Joana goes further and says that she was a victim of aggression. ADN accuses the media and commentators of contributing to the attacks.

Joana Amaral Dias was recording a video, which she ended up sharing on Instagram, in Terreiro do Paço, in Lisbon, reporting the atmosphere and showing the ADN poster with the call for respect for the Constitution of the Portuguese Republic.

At that moment, whistles and words such as “fascist”, “April 25 always” and “fascism never again” are heard. In front of him, there was a group of people, with Portuguese flags.

At least twice, the cell phone shakes, while Joana continues to be booed.

“I was just attacked,” she says in the video.

“It’s okay, I’m here to defend the values of the 25th of April: freedom, democracy, justice and peace, always, every day”, he then states.

The ADN candidate for the European elections was also approached by two people, who told her to “honor the memory of Miguel Portas”. “Get out of here, nobody wants you here”, they say.

In the same video, and to conclude, he lists several of “his flags” from recent years. He emphasizes that he defends “peace and freedom” and says he is against “unbridled globalization”.

“Victim of conditioning to their freedom of expression”

In a statement, the National Democratic Alternative (ADN) condemns the “aggression” of the party’s candidate for the European elections.

“He was a victim of restrictions on his freedom of expression when a party delegation, which had gone to Terreiro do Paço, to legitimately participate in the activities celebrating the 25th of April, was carrying out an action to defend Rights, Freedoms and Guarantees Fundamentals enshrined in the Constitution of the Portuguese Republic”, says the party in the note.

The ADN, which claims to defend freedom, democracy and peace, considers that there is still a “long way to go” for everyone to live in democracy.

The party accuses the media and some commentators of being some of those responsible for the situation by “lying” about ADN’s ideology and political positions.

“We will never allow ourselves to be intimidated and we will not accept any type of limitation to our capacity for civic and political action”, he says in the statement.
