The head of the CDU list at the European Parliament, João Oliveira, defended, this Sunday, that the attacks on immigrants in Porto are “intolerable events” that arise from the ideology of anti-democratic political forces.

For Oliveira, the events of Friday morning in Porto, in which immigrants were attacked by a group of men, “are not disconnected from the hate speech, racism and xenophobia that is being propagated in Portuguese society by reactionary political forces and undemocratic”.

The head of the CDU list for the European elections on June 9 defended, in a statement, that these reactionary political forces “take advantage of the circumstance in which immigrants are subject to exploitation and dehumanization, with the most basic lack of response in guaranteeing their rights, whether in work, housing, or access to healthcare, to put pressure on the degradation of living conditions for the Portuguese as well.”

In the early hours of Friday, the PSP was alerted at around 1 am to an attack in Campo 24 de Agosto, in Porto, against two immigrants by a group of four or five men who fled before the agents arrived, the spokesperson specified. police, indicating that the two attacked were treated at Hospital São João.

About 10 minutes later, on Rua do Bonfim, 10 immigrants were attacked, in the house where they were staying, by a group of 10 men, armed with sticks and, allegedly, with a firearm, which the PSP has not yet been able to confirm. , said the same source.

According to the spokesperson, at 3:00 am, on Rua Fernandes Tomás, another immigrant was also attacked by other suspects, one of whom used a firearm.

Following these attacks, six men were identified and one was arrested for possession of an illegal weapon, having been brought to court and placed in pre-trial detention.

Given the suspicion of the existence of a hate crime, the matter was transferred to the Judiciary Police.
