The deputy of the Social Democratic Party (PSD), Ana Gabriela Cabilhas, stated, in the solemn session of the 50th anniversary of the 25th of April, that “politicians are at the service of the people” and must work to solve their problems, and not “ divide” the country.

The former student leader, and the youngest deputy on the social democratic bench, argued that it cannot be accepted that “the best version” of democracy was left in the past, “crystallized in the Carnation Revolution”.

Ana Gabriela Cabilhas, considered that it is necessary “an improved democracy reconciled with the people, which is not content with surviving, but which seeks to flourish with the intensity of April 74, November 75 or going to the polls for the Constituent Assembly ”.

“The voice of the people is the greatest strength of democracy. Therefore, the House of Democracy must listen to the people, to give back to the people the fulfillment of their legitimate expectations”, he concluded.

For the social democrat, the solution must go through parliament, and all its deputies: “Refusing to allow extremists to radicalize society, dividing it into two: politicians and the people. No!”.

“Politicians are at the service of the people. Politicians are also the people (…) Because here there is no us and them, we are all Portugal”, stated the young deputy, deserving applause from the PSD, Socialist Party (PS) and CDS-PP benches.

Ana Gabriela Cabilhas argued that freedom must be linked to “true equality of opportunities”. “Equal opportunities come with the solution to people’s problems that we know exist, and for which this Government and this Assembly are dedicated to solving”, she considered.

The social democrat stated that extremism and populism, “any historical revisionism with Soviet nostalgia”, and also “vague ‘wokists’” must be rejected, which she called “the new censorship of good”.

“Replacing the coffee policy and comments on social media with more participation in the community. Breaking with installed interests. Carrying out the reforms that the country is crying out for. Saying no, no to anyone who wants to divide the country,” he appealed.

“The future of democracy”, he continued, “is not certain”, but the way it should be prepared is “the key to better defending it”.

“With more progress, solidarity, more respect for people and the dignity that should be enshrined in everyone, for the planet and its resources”, he continued.

At the end of his speech, he addressed the military and combatants, stating that the country owes “a debt of gratitude” and to all Portuguese, “from the youngest to the oldest”, “from the interior and the coast”.
