The Bloco de Esquerda organizes its parliamentary days in Madeira on Monday and Tuesday, focusing on the debate and presentation of initiatives on the housing crisis, the climate transition or the fight against corruption.

Speaking to the Lusa agency, BE’s parliamentary leader, Fabian Figueiredo, highlighted that these will be parliamentary days that bring together deputies to the Assembly of the Republic and the deputy elected to the Legislative Assembly of Madeira, Roberto Almada.

The blocker justified the choice of location by arguing that “in Madeira, for almost 50 years, the worst of the Portuguese right has ruled, which applies the program that the Democratic Alliance wants to apply to the entire national territory”, in a criticism of the current PSD/CDS minority government -PP, led by Luís Montenegro.

From the perspective of the bloc parliamentary leader, this right-wing governance results in “a deregulated housing market” and the “active promotion of real estate speculation”.

“The right wants to convince the country that more construction solves the problem of housing prices. It doesn’t. Madeira is one of the regions of the country where there is the most new construction and, at the same time, the price of housing continues to grow because, as it doesn’t there is regulation of the housing sector, all new construction is absorbed by the luxury segment”, he criticized.

In this context, BE intends to present initiatives to “control the price of rents, lower the price of houses and lower the cost of housing credit”.

Another topic that will be debated will be the “just climate transition”, with the blocist parliamentary group arguing that Portugal “can and should do more to combat and mitigate the effects of climate change”, bringing forward carbon neutrality targets.

“The climate transition can and should mean new jobs, qualified jobs and investment in key areas, done in an intelligent way. We will present proposals in this regard”, he stated.

BE also wants to present proposals to “qualify democracy in the Autonomous Region of Madeira and throughout the national territory” and “impose more rules of transparency and combating corruption”, giving as an example the end of projects of Potential National Interest (PIN) , a commitment he made in the electoral campaign for the legislative elections.

“But we also want to draw attention to the fact that the incompatibilities statute is not yet in force in the Autonomous Region of Madeira. This means that, unlike what happens in the Azores parliament or the Assembly of the Republic, it is possible for an elected representative in the Assembly Legislature of the Autonomous Region of Madeira to develop private activities that are incompatible with the development of its mandate. This is incomprehensible to us”, he criticized.

Furthermore, Fabian Figueiredo lamented that the lists of candidates for the elections for Madeira’s regional parliament are “the only ones where no parity criteria are imposed”.

Asked whether this could be a moment of pre-election campaign, as the region goes to vote again on May 26th, Fabian Figueiredo rejected that this is the party’s objective, stating that the deputies will be focused on presenting proposals, and added that the idea arose before this vote was scheduled.

According to the published program, the opening of the days is scheduled for 2:30 pm, with a press conference at the regional parliament to present initiatives. Beforehand, in the morning, a visit to Praia Formosa is planned. Still on Monday, a contact action with the population is planned in Funchal in the afternoon and a dinner rally in the evening.

On Tuesday, BE’s parliamentary days begin with “local and work meetings”, and in the afternoon the closing press conference will take place, with the presentation of initiatives by the parliamentary leader.
