The Municipality of Celorico de Basto, in celebration of the 50th anniversary of the 25th of April, paid tribute to António Manuel Marinho Gomes and Fernando Freitas, followed by a commemorative municipal assembly.
The posthumous tribute to two Celoricenses with a life dedicated to social, political and associative causes, was promoted with the attribution of the toponyms, Avenida Comandante António Manuel Marinho Gomes and Rua Fernando Freitas. “We celebrate April with a tribute to two great men from Celorico de Basto”said José Peixoto Lima, president of the Celorico de Basto City Council.
The mayor highlighted that the two honored “They performed functions in the Municipality of Celorico de Basto and were at the service of the Celoricenses Volunteer Firefighters Humanitarian Association. It is people like these who serve as an example to us, who make us reflect on the values of April, very present in this municipality”.
The ceremony was attended by António Manuel Marinho Gomes’ wife, Teresa Marinho Gomes, who made reference to the legacy left by these men who “Throughout their life path, they left a mark on so many people they deprived, a mark that resulted in such a heartfelt tribute, by putting their name on a street in Celorico de Basto, their homeland, where they loved to live”.
Later, a commemorative Municipal Assembly took place, a formal moment with speeches alluding to the 50th anniversary of the 25th of April.
During this solemn ceremony, José Peixoto Lima was pleased to see the Municipal Assembly gathered to celebrate “half a century of freedom and democracy, half a century of fundamental achievements for free life in society, one of them being the democratic local power that is so well represented here with the current holders and many of those who throughout this democratic period dedicated part of their life to the public cause”.
The solemn ceremony also included speeches from groups sitting in the Municipal Assembly and the president of the Municipal Assembly, António Machado.
This was followed by tributes to 27 communities aged 25, 50 and 100 years, who received copper, silver and gold medals of merit, respectively. Jornal Povo de Basto and Rádio Região de Basto received the gold medal of merit.
The ceremony ended with the performance of Grândola Vila Morena, by Zeca Afonso, by the choir of the Academia de Música de Basto.
