The prime minister stated today that he intends to maintain bilateral cooperation between Portugal and Angola and “deepen commercial relations”, highlighting that there are many Portuguese companies operating in “strategic areas” for Luanda.

Speaking to journalists after a meeting with the President of Angola, João Lourenço, at the prime minister’s official residence in São Bento, Luís Montenegro assured that cooperation between the two countries and peoples “will continue”.

“I had the opportunity to give the President of Angola an overview of our intentions, of the Government of Portugal, to maintain this path of close relationship between our governments in many areas: from culture to education, to economic relations, in which we have every interest to deepen”, he highlighted.

The head of the Portuguese executive said that it is the intention of the two countries to hold a meeting of the Portugal-Angola Intergovernmental Joint Commission in Lisbon in the coming months, to “continue the strategic cooperation program” and “deepen commercial relations” between the two countries, ensuring “more intensity in the activities” of Angolan and Portuguese companies.

“Today we have many Portuguese companies operating in priority, strategic areas in Angola: in the agri-food sector, textiles, pharmaceuticals, tourism, construction, renewable energy, technological areas, and we are very interested in continuing to follow this common path” , he indicated.

Montenegro said that the Government has “every interest” in consolidating these positions “in a framework that is not only bilateral, but also multilateral”.

“From this point of view, I will have the opportunity to continue interacting with President João Lourenço, cooperating with Angola within the framework of Angola’s relationship with the European Union, within the framework of the CPLP, the United Nations and the G20, as we were both invited by Brazil to be able, this year, to participate in the work of the G20”, he stressed.

The Prime Minister thanked João Lourenço for visiting Portugal, highlighting “the symbolism and meaning of his presence at the time of the celebration of the 50th anniversary of the 25th of April” and the “magnificent speech he gave” on Thursday, at the commemorative session of the 50th anniversary of the Revolution, at the Belém Cultural Center (CCB).

In this speech, the President of Angola said that the challenge that the former colonies currently face is “the consolidation of democracy, the diversification and strengthening” of their economies and welcomed the “fraternal ties of friendship” between Portugal and the African-speaking countries. Portuguese official.

With João Lourenço at his side, Montenegro highlighted that, in this speech, the Angolan head of state testified “to the historical, cultural, extremely deep relationship that unites the Angolan people and the Portuguese people, which also unites the Government of Portugal and the Presidency of Republic of Angola”.

“The words he spoke to us will certainly mark our cooperation relationship, which already has many achievements, but will also translate into greater well-being for the Angolan and Portuguese people in the coming years,” he said.

Stressing that João Lourenço’s presence “had a great meaning that will continue to reveal itself in the coming months” and in 2025, “when the 50 years of Angola’s independence are celebrated”, Montenegro expressed gratitude to him “for his availability, for work, for cooperation, for friendship”.

“It is with the future in mind, the well-being of Angolans and Portuguese people that we welcome you today, that we welcome you, in the hope that our relations, the stronger they are, the more productive they will be for the quality of life of our people “, he said.

This year, the heads of state of Angola, Cape Verde, Guinea-Bissau, Mozambique, São Tomé and Príncipe, Portuguese-speaking African countries (PALOP), and Timor-Leste participated in Lisbon in a session evocative of the 25th of April.
