“It is important to emphasize that the current Government follows the same line as previous Governments. There was and is not a question of any process or program of specific actions for this purpose”, says the Executive, in a statement.
“Still, the Portuguese State, through its sovereign bodies – namely, the President of the Republic and the Government -, has made gestures and cooperation programs to recognize historical truth with impartiality and impartiality”, he adds.
The Government gives some examples, two of which are mainly symbolic in nature: it recalls that Portugal has already recognized “the decisive contribution” of former African colonies to the fall of the Estado Novo and, also, that it has already sent an apology to Mozambique “for tragic Wyriamu massacre”, which occurred in 1972 and killed nearly 400 local inhabitants.
The statement then recalls that Portugal also financed the Museum of the National Liberation Struggle, in Angola, the museumization of the Tarrafal concentration camp, in Cape Verde, or the recovery of the graves of slaves on the island of Mozambique. It is also worth highlighting the “priority” that, in the opinion of the Portuguese Government, has been given to “general cooperation policies” in areas such as language, education, culture, economy or health.
