A blocking anticyclone in high latitudes will guarantee an unstable week in mainland Portugal, leading to the arrival of an isolated cold depression in our country. Therefore, rain, among other effects, will be present throughout almost the entire week.
The current meteorological panorama in Continental Portugal coats itself with a weather that became considerably cooler between last Thursday (25th) and today, the 28th. Temperatures gradually cooled following the arrival of a isolated cold depression – coming from Greenland – with which a maritime polar air mass.
This has generated in recent days, in addition to the cold environment, periods of rain or showers moderate to strong in several regions, as well as a drop in snow, thunderstorms and hail.
Weather in Portugal this weekend: cold depression will bring rain, snow, thunderstorms and hail. Here are the most affected areas
Nonetheless, this Sunday, April 28th, the weather has stabilized significantly, with sun and periods of partly cloudy skiesbut even so, there were some post-frontal showers in various areas of the Continent.
Between Tuesday (30) and Friday, May 3, our geography will be under the influence of an isolated cold depression which will cause a increased unstable weather conditions and precipitation, especially in the North and Center Regions. With the movement of high pressure to higher latitudes, practically the entire territory of Portugal was exposed to the arrival of depressions.
The European model predicts a week of rain, especially from Tuesday
European model weekly precipitation trend maps predict a rainy week (rain above the climatological reference average) in the North, Center, Lisbon and Tagus Valley, Alto Alentejo, Central Alentejo and Alentejo Coast Regions and almost the entire Autonomous Region of Azores (except one of the islands in the Eastern Group).
In the remaining regions – Baixo Alentejo, Algarve and Santa Maria Island – precipitation will be around normal values, except in Madeira Archipelago, where the week will be slightly dry.
Positive precipitation anomalies are attributed to a isolated cold depression that will bring rain to almost the entire continent and another depression that will affect the weather in the Azores.
In mainland Portugal, Monday (29) will be a generally stable day with slightly cloudy skies, although with increased cloudiness in the afternoon. Showers may fall in the North and Center interior during the afternoon.
However, it is already From Tuesday (30) onwards, precipitation will resume due to the passage of a front. There will be periods of rain across most of the western coastal strip, extending east towards the remaining regions during the morning. Subsequently, it will progressively switch to a regime of showers in the North and Center Regions during the afternoon.
It is likely that in Wednesday (1) and Thursday (2)Labor Day holiday and bridge, the rain associated with the front extends to the rest of the country in the form of showers, potentially accompanied by thunderstorms and hail due to the approach in latitude of the isolated cold depression.
The most abundant and intense periods of precipitation will occur in the North and Center – in particular north of the Tagus and specifically west of the Condensation Barrier (Viana do Castelo, Braga, Porto, Aveiro, western parts of Vila Real and Viseu). On both days, a drop in snow in mountains, mountains and northern and central locations above 1000/1200 meters altitude.
