Alfredo Cunha, the photojournalist author of iconic images related to the 25th of April, was, this Sunday, honored in Amadora. One of the photographs he captured is now immortalized in a tile panel made by Vhils.

To build the panel “Honoring those who work” that now sits on the facade of the Amadora Municipal Chamber, Vhils needed more than four thousand glazed tiles. It recreates a photograph taken by Alfredo Cunha during a demonstration in August 1975.

“This image shows us a Sorefame worker at a unitary demonstration that took place in Lisbon, where several workers were present. I photographed him because I knew him from here in Amadora, and because he was wrapped in the flag. And I thought it was beautiful! He was protected, he was already an old man… It was an image that I always liked and that I immediately asked for this panel to be made”, said the photojournalist, in an interview with SIC.

On freedom day, there was a philharmonic band and several generations appeared. And there were carnations in honor of the photojournalist who was the author of the most iconic images of the 25th of April.

“I was living in Amadora on the 25th of April and it was at this station that I caught the train to go and photograph the events of the 25th of April. It would never have crossed my mind to be honored in this way with this panel by Vhils and with the chaimite that is from Amadora , too,” he said.

And 50 years later, Alfredo Cunha cannot do without the company of a camera… and continues to record moments, even if he is the object of the tribute.
