THE LOOKOUT | Chamusca village center remains upside down

-

The urban requalification works in Chamusca have been going on for many months and were supposed to be ready at the end of last year, according to promises from the mayor, they continue to make people talk for the worst reasons. Paulo Queimado announced in the last council session, held on April 16, that some stages of the process still need to be completed, namely the connection of the cinema-theater to Estrada Nacional (EN) 118, the front of the Paços do Concelho building and connection to the building blue, the requalification of the sidewalk and placement of a zebra crossing in the same area, and the intervention in the Jardim do Coreto area, namely the connection of public lighting.
It should be remembered that Paulo Queimado (PS) assured several times, in meetings of mayors, that the town’s requalification works would be ready by December 31, 2023. The truth is that the work remains far from being completed and the constraints for the population they continue to be many. One of the fears is that the works could have an influence on the Ascension week, the biggest festival in the municipality that takes place at the beginning of May and lasts nine days. The mayor continues without giving a new deadline for completing the work, which would be expected, considering that he did not keep his word in relation to the last ones he stipulated.

Works shrouded in controversy
The urban requalification works in Chamusca cost the council’s coffers many millions of euros, but did not generate consensus among the population, especially due to the damage caused. In October 2023, O MIRANTE met with residents and traders on Rua General Humberto Delgado, one of the arteries that connects to the main road that crosses Chamusca, who were outraged because of the several floods they suffered due to the works. The previous month, at the Chamusca Municipal Assembly, the family that owns Farmácia Joaquim Maria Cabeça, located next to Jardim do Coreto, shared their concerns about the possible consequences of the works on the provision of services to the population, which has lasted for more than a century , and presented some solutions that he would like to see involved in the project.
This year, Sónia Lucas, mother of two children, one of whom is five months old, needed to go to the Social Security office in Chamusca and complained about the difficulties she had in entering the building. “It is regrettable that accessibility for residents is not ensured on a street that, incidentally, has two public services”, she lamented in a conversation with O MIRANTE.
