Aldina Duarte opens Theatro Circo’s May program, with a show where she will present her latest album, ‘Metade-Metade’. It is on Friday, the 3rd, at 9:30 pm, that the fado singer’s new poetic and thematic language, in an album written by Capicua, is presented to the public in the Main Room.
On Saturday, at 11 am and 3 pm, ‘Nuvens’ flies over to Theatro Circo with a show for the youngest, where clouds, their mysteries and peculiarities will be explored, in a creation by Joana Araújo, Maria Mónica and Ricardo Baptista .
The Contexto cycle, curated and moderated by Andreia Garcia, returns on May 4th, with Mariana Tengner Barros and actress Carolina Amaral. With the word ‘matrix’ as a motto, the place of women in art, the place of speech, invisibility and cartographies of gesture and creation will be discussed.
Captain Fausto are back at Theatro Circo on May 4th, at 9:30 pm. ‘Subida Infinita’, the Lisbon natives’ fifth album, presents itself as the band’s last as a quintet, now with the departure of Francisco Ferreira, keyboardist since formation.
Between the 9th and 19th of May, Theatro Circo will be the stage for several shows from the exhibition component of the 2nd edition of the INDEX biennial. Ryoji Ikeda opens hostilities on the 9th with the debut in Portugal of ‘ultratronics’ [live set]’, where two universes of expression by the Japanese artist intersect – electronic music and digital art.
Lawrence Abu Hamdan presents, on the 10th, Air Pressure, a conference/performance resulting from the recording, between May 2020 and May 2021, of a diary of the Beirut sky, where he captured more than 400 actions by Israeli fighters and unmanned vehicles.
On the 11th, SYNSPECIES, an audiovisual project created by Spanish designer and musician Elías Merino and Slovenian media artist Tadej Droljc, presents ASBU, a journey through time and space based on a cosmogonic myth that tries to explain the formation of the universe from a audiovisual narrative.
On the second weekend of the biennial, on the 17th, the show ODE ao INDEX is presented in the small auditorium.
In addition to the performative component, the Theatro Circo’s Salão Nobre will also host INDEX exhibitions between the 9th and 19th: ‘Empire’s Island’, by Jonas Staal, and ’45th Parallel’ and ‘Rubber Coated Steel’ by Turner Prize winner, Lawrence Abu Hamdan.
On the 24th and 25th, the Teatro Nacional S. João returns to Theatro Circo with the play ‘Fado Alexandrino’, by writer António Lobo Antunes, with staging and dramaturgy by Nuno Cardoso.
In Conversations with Artists, on the 25th, at 11 am, the director and artistic director of Teatro Nacional São João, Nuno Cardoso, speaks with Sérgio Guimarães de Sousa, a specialist in the work of António Lobo Antunes, about Fado Alexandrino.
In the last show of the month, there is another session of Counterpoint, a cycle dedicated to the composition of the 19th century. XX and XXI. On the 31st, under the direction of maestro Jan Wierzba, the Braga Sinfonietta takes to the stage with a show that highlights the richness and diversity of writing for strings with compositions by Kaija Saariaho, Gra?yna Bacewicz, György Ligeti and Arvo Pärt.
