Government wants expansion of movement in Portela, and then Alcochete

According to the newspaper Eco, Luís Montenegro’s Executive does not believe that the new airport can be completed by 2030. Until then, he wants to reinforce movement at Humberto Delgado Airport.

On May 7, 2008, the then Minister of Public Works, Mário Lino, announced a new airport in Alcochete. Fourteen years later this option was recovered.

The Government of Luís Montenegro already has a preferred solution for the future Lisbon airport, writes Eco this Monday. The bet, writes the newspaper, involves reinforcing traffic at Humberto Delgado Airport and building a new infrastructure at Campo de Alcohete shot.

This preference will therefore be in line with the option seen as most advantageous in the Strategic Environmental Assessment of the Independent Technical Commission (CTI), which saw Alcochete and Vendas Novas as the most favorable options. At the same time, it would be a consensual solution with the Socialist Party, whose general secretary, Pedro Nuno Santos, has already defended that he supports the CTI’s recommendation, writes Eco.

However, the Government does not believe that the new infrastructure can be completed in 2030. Therefore, plans also include increasing movement at Portela airport, in the city of Lisbon. Eco remembers that theIncreasing capacity will require a large investment by ANA and also overcome environmental barriers. It is also worth remembering that in 2019 the concessionaire presented a plan to increase capacity to 46 movements per hour, and this would face difficulties in getting an environmental green light, due to the impact of both polluting emissions and noise on public health, the newspaper also mentions.
