The accumulated values ​​of incoming guests, for the period from January to March 2024 (448.6 thousand; +3.6% than in the same period of 2023), also show growth, the same happening with overnight stays, which exceeded the 2.4 million (+5.6% than in the same quarter of 2023).

For the purposes of comparability with the data released by INE, it is necessary to exclude local accommodation with less than 10 beds, given that, according to this logic of calculating results, overnight stays in tourist accommodation, in March 2024, showed a year-on-year growth of 4.1%, a positive variation similar to that seen at national level (+12.8%).

In the Region, overnight stays by residents in Portugal decreased by 5.3% compared to the same month last year, reaching around 133.6 thousand (14.4% of the total), while those by residents abroad rose by 10.1%, standing at 791.2 thousand. Guests arriving in March 2024, residing in the country, totaled 40.5 thousand, and those residing abroad, 141.3 thousand.

In the country, in March 2024, the growth of external markets increased (+13.8%), with 4.1 million overnight stays being produced by these markets. Resident overnight stays totaled 1.6 million (+10.3%). By NUTS II region, the biggest increases in overnight stays were recorded in the West and Vale do Tejo (+29.4%), followed by the Center (+23.1%) and Alentejo (+21.0%). The most modest growth was observed in AR Madeira (+4.1%) and Greater Lisbon (+8.9%).

The first estimated data, in the Region, for the reference month, show that markets sending residents abroad represented 85.6% of total overnight stays. In this context, in March 2024, the German market recorded the most overnight stays, with around 217.6 thousand (+3.8% compared to the same month), followed by the United Kingdom, with 177.4 thousand (+ 7.3%), and France, with 52.7 thousand (+6.8%).

In March 2024, 10.0% of tourist accommodation establishments will have been closed or have not registered any guest movement.
