Under the motto “Historic center, summer without cars”, the city of Viseu will restrict car traffic until September 21st.
Viseu is preparing for a different summer in its historic center, with the implementation of a measure that promises to transform the experience of visiting the old part of the city of Viseu. A Viseu City Council (CMV) announced last Tuesday (April 23) that the historic center will be car-free until September 21st of the current year 2024.
Under the motto “Historic center, car-free summer“, the traffic restriction will be applied to Fridays, Saturdays, Sundays, the eve of public holidays and public holidays. During these days, vehicle access will be blocked at certain times – Fridays and the eve of public holidays between 7pm and 2am, Saturdays between 4pm and 2am and Sundays and holidays between 3pm and 00am –, thus allowing Viseu residents, visitors and tourists to enjoy the historic center of the city of Viseu with greater tranquility and safety.
According to the plan published by the Viseu municipality, traffic will be stopped on the main access roads to the old part of the city, more specifically at the beginning of Street of Combatants of the Great War and at the junction of Travessa da Misericórdia as Cathedral churchyard. However, circulation is maintained by Calçada da Vigia. On days when there are shows or concerts in the Cathedral churchyardthe traffic closure will be carried out on the Travessa da Misericórdia.
To ensure access for residents of the historic area, people with reduced mobility and guests of hotel units, exceptional entry will be permitted through the Porta do Soarin reversewith the exit to be carried out by the Rua Chão do Mestre, Rua Augusta Cruz, D. Duarte Square It is Rua Augusto Hilário or Rua D. Duarte.
During worship hours and religious ceremonies in Viseu Cathedral or in Church of Mercyaccess to Cathedral churchyard will be exceptionally permitted by Travessa da Misericórdiain order to facilitate the participation of believers in the respective events.
With this initiative, the City Council of Viseu aims not only promote a more authentic experience of the historic centerbut also encourage sustainable tourism and the preservation of cultural heritage of the city of Viseu.
