“O SPAC – Civil Aviation Pilots’ Union welcomed the recommendation of the SATA Board of Directors that defends the annulment of the privatization process of Azores Airlines, a company belonging to the SATA Air Açores Group”, says the union in a statement released today.
The management of Grupo SATA recommended, last week, “not to proceed with the current privatization tender”.
Now, SPAC notes that it had already expressed, in November, in a letter sent to SATA and the Regional Government of the Azores, apprehension regarding the privatization of the SATA group company responsible for the Azores’ connections abroad.
The competition jury, led by economist Augusto Mateus, maintained the decision to accept only one competitor in the final report, but admitted reservations regarding the ability of the Newtour/MS Aviation consortium to ensure the company’s viability.
“Azores Airlines is for the Azores, as TAP is for the country, and it cannot be forgotten that around 80% to 90% of SATA passengers, which provides public transport services between the islands of the archipelago, come from Azores Airlines and a company with great economic weight and importance for the archipelago cannot be called into question”, defended SPAC.
The union also says that it “looks forward” to the Regional Government’s final decision on the procedure.
