WAround 50 people of various nationalities have been living for several months in an improvised campsite at Quinta dos Ingleses, in Carcavelos, as they are unable to afford the rent for a house.

About two weeks ago, Cascais City Council gave authorization to the company Alves Ribeiro, owner of the land, to seal off the space and notify the ‘occupants’ that they must leave the site by May 31st.

Today this information has crossed borders and is news in the newspaper O Globo, in Brazil. Journalist Gian Amato spoke to two Brazilian women who have been living in tents on the “noble land of Carcavelos” since they “gave up looking for a property with affordable rent” in Portugal, where, as the Brazilian website recalls, the “cost of real estate has pushed immigrants and Portuguese to live on the streets or in improvised situations”.

To Globo, Andréia Machado revealed that she and 30 other people are trying to “negotiate” another piece of land to move and live in the same way they live today. In tents and trailers.

This is because, says the Brazilian, who works cleaning properties, everyone refuses to go back to renting houses “which cost 50% of minimum wages”.

According to her, the group includes elderly people who receive 250 euros in pensions and “some less than that”. As well as a 58-year-old Portuguese man who was evicted from the house where he had lived for 48 years and a Portuguese woman, who suffers from a chronic illness, and who has been waiting since 2017 for a social house.

“She tries to find a job, but without a home and at her age, she hasn’t been successful”, explained Andréia.

The same happens with Brazilian Márcia Araújo who, despite working, does not have enough funds to pay a rent in Lisbon.

To Globo, the Brazilian women showed the ‘eviction letter’ they received from the company Alves Ribeiro. In addition to the departure date, the document makes it clear that all goods must also be taken by May 31st.

According to SIC Notícias, the improvised campsite will give way to an urban park and the construction of a housing development with commerce, services and hotels.
