As part of the 2024 edition of the European Architecture Prize EU Mies Award, free events, open to the public and without registration, are promoted in three distinguished architectural works, located in Portugal. Thus, on Saturday, May 4th, visits will take place to the selected works Caminho das Escadinhas, in Matosinhos, at 11 am and to the General Silveira Building, in Porto, with three options: at 3 pm, 4 pm and 5 pm. On Saturday, June 1st, at 3 pm it will be the turn of the finalist work Praça e Posto de Turismo in Piódão.

The three works are part of a set of 40, selected from 362 nominees, located in more than 30 locations across Europe, and which will be the subject of the “Out & About. Discovering Architecture. EUmies Awards 2024”, for two months (April 22nd to June 23rd). The aim is for everyone to learn more about buildings and public spaces with their authors, building owners and other people or entities involved.

During the visit to Caminho das Escadinhas, Paulo Moreira, the architect who shares the authorship of the project with Verkron, explains with some guests, on a walk between the hillside of the Monte Xisto neighborhood and the bank of the River Leça, in Matosinhos, the process that brought together an interdisciplinary team of architects, local builders, artists and a wide network of partners, to recover that area for public use.

The visit to the General Silveira Building will also be attended by architects Tiago Antero and Vitor Preto Fernandes, from ATA Atelier and Entretempos, respectively, the authors of the project, and by the owner of this residential and commercial building, who in a conversation will explain everything this work involved.

Architects Paula del Rio and João Branco, from the Branco del Rio studio, will guide the visit to the Square and the Piódão Tourist Office, on June 1st. Regarding this initiative, there will also be a conference on site, moderated by Nuno Grande and attended by Luís Paulo Costa, president of Arganil City Council, Carlos Abade, president of Turismo de Portugal, Carlos Ascensão, president of Celorico da Beira City Council and the Association of Historical Villages of Portugal, Dalila Dias, coordinator of AHP, professor José Reis and other architects.

The first edition of the European Community Prize for Contemporary Architecture Mies van der Rohe (EU Mies Award), in 1988, was won by the bank in Vila de Conde, authored by Álvaro Siza Vieira. Since then, works by Portuguese architects have been among those selected.
