The Coimbra Palace of Justice will mark its 90th anniversary with a conference, a concert and the opening of an exhibition, the organization revealed today.
The Court of Appeal and the Judicial Court of the District of Coimbra organize, on the 6th of May, a cycle evocative of the 90 years of the Palace of Justice, as well as an allusion to Manuel Rodrigues Júnior, who was a professor at the Faculty of Law of the University of Coimbra and founder of the Bar Association.
Manuel Rodrigues Júnior, who presided over the inauguration ceremony of the Palace of Justice in Coimbra 90 years ago, was also responsible for the acquisition, on January 27, 1928, of the then Palacete do Ameal, where the Colégio de São Tomás de Aquino, so that the Palace of Justice could be installed there.
The conference “Palácio de Justiça de Coimbra – Memories of its 90 years and of a Man who did not pass” is scheduled for 2:30 pm on May 6th, which will take place in the main hall of the Court of Appeal of Coimbra.
The opening will be in charge of judge Carlos Oliveira, president of the Judicial Court of the District of Coimbra, while the closing will be in charge of judge Jorge Loureiro, president of the Court of Appeal of Coimbra.
The current Secretary of State for Culture, Maria de Lurdes Craveiro, the jurist and historian Luís Bigotte Chorão, professor Paulo Mota Pinto and judge Marco Aço Borges will speak.
Moderation will be the responsibility of the vice-rector of the University of Coimbra, João Nuno Calvão da Silva.
Shortly after the conference, at 5:30 pm, the exhibition alluding to the building and Manuel Rodrigues Júnior will be opened at the Palace of Justice in Coimbra.
At 9:30 pm, a musical concert called “Concerto à Democracia” will take place on the outer perimeter of the Palace of Justice.
It will be performed by the Ensemble of the Orquestra Clássica do Centro and will feature the participation of soprano Marina Pacheco and tenor João Farinha.
The Court of Appeal of Coimbra has been located, since October 27, 1928, in the building corresponding to the current Palace of Justice of Coimbra.
The Judicial Court of the District of Coimbra has also been located in this Palace since June 1933.
