In the portrait that Pordata prepared for May 1st (Workers’ Day), it can be seen that the average Portuguese worker has aged compared to 20 years ago.

In 2023, a third of workers were between 44 and 64 years old, but in 2023 practically half are in this age group.

At the same time, young workers up to 24 years old decreased by more than 40%, while the age group of workers that increased the most was between 55 and 64 years old, registering an increase of 66%.

The data compiled by Pordata also reveal that Portugal is the second country in the European Union (EU) of 27 Member States, after Spain, with fewer young people between the ages of 25 and 34 among its total number of workers, and the fourth country with older workforce – since for every 100 workers under 35 there are 99 over 54 -, only surpassed by Bulgaria, Latvia and Italy.

On the other hand, Portugal surpassed the European target of, by 2030, at least 78% of the population between 20 and 64 years old being employed, with a value of 78.2%, remaining above the EU average (75% ).

The country also reached the target of the percentage of young people between 15 and 29 years old who do not study or work not exceeding 9%. In 2023, it recorded a rate of 8.9%.

Portugal still ranks 13th among EU countries in terms of work accidents, having reduced their occurrence by half in 10 years and ranking at two work accidents per 100,000 employees.
