Collection of bio-waste progresses in Mealhada and foresees a 6% reduction in undifferentiated waste

-

The Mealhada Chamber began collecting bio-waste in the municipality this week, focusing, in this first phase, on restaurants and hotels in the Municipality, with 150 locations already identified that will receive 20-liter buckets and 120-liter containers. In terms of the residential sector, the Municipality will give priority to the municipality’s large producers of bio-waste, namely buildings on horizontal property, with buckets and containers being distributed to 1,324 homes.

With this collection, estimated at 450 tons/year, it is expected that the volume of waste sent as unsorted waste will be reduced by around 6% in this first year.

After implementing the door-to-door collection service for glass, paper/cardboard and plastic/metal waste, the Municipality of Mealhada is now moving towards collecting bio-waste. At Canal Horeca, in schools, in industries with canteens, in hotels and in all bio-waste producers, whose production justifies it, 20-liter buckets and 120-liter containers with pedal and identifier will be distributed.

In the residential sector, 20-liter buckets will be distributed to each residential unit, and 120-liter containers will be installed for door-to-door collection, in common areas of the buildings.

The Municipality will also distribute 14 800 liter containers to all cemeteries in the municipality for the selective collection of bio-waste and green material.

In a second phase, the intention is to expand collection with the distribution of more than 4000 brown 120-liter containers and more than 2600 20-liter buckets.

“The selective collection of bio-waste (food waste) will be mandatory in Portugal and it is important to implement this new habit. People should bear in mind that by separating food waste they are reducing the waste sent to landfill, increasing the materials that they will be recycled and produce high quality compost, a natural fertilizer for the soil. And from these same soils we will harvest the vegetables and fruits that will once again be in our kitchens”, says António Jorge Franco, president of the Municipal Council of Mealhada.
