Population balance remains negative reveals National Statistics Institute

The population’s natural balance remained negative last year (-32,596), although it has improved, with the Greater Lisbon region recording a positive value, the National Statistics Institute (INE) revealed today. “In 2023, there were 85,699 live births to mothers residing in Portugal, which represents an increase of 2.4% (2,028 more children), compared to the previous year”, highlighted the INE. More than half of the children (59.5%) were born to unmarried parents.

In the same year, 118,295 people living in Portugal died, which corresponds to a decrease of 4.8% (6,016 fewer deaths), compared to 2022. There were 210 deaths of children under one year old (seven fewer babies than in 2022), “which is reflected in a decrease in the infant mortality rate, from 2.6 in 2022 to 2.5 deaths per thousand live births in 2023”, highlighted INE in the Highlight published today.

The increase in the number of children and the decrease in deaths led to an improvement in the natural balance from -40,640 in 2022 to -32,596 in 2023. “This improvement was recorded in all regions, with the Greater Lisbon region reaching a positive natural balance of +461”, specified the same source.

In 2023, 36,980 weddings were celebrated in Portugal (0.1% more than in 2022). In 71.2% of cases, the spouses already lived in a de facto union before marriage.
