The Forest Police Corps of the Autonomous Region of Madeira, under the supervision of the Institute of Forests and Nature Conservation (IFCN), provides in its statutes that members who reach 15 years of effective service in their career without having been subject to any disciplinary sanction may be awarded the Medal for Exemplary Behavior.

The Forest Police Corps is currently made up of 82 members and has its own competencies in the area of Forests and Nature Conservation, states a government note.

The CPF emerged in 1913, as a result of the reform movement, arising from the establishment of the Republic in 1910 and which created the “Regulation of the Rural and Forest Police Service in the Madeira Archipelago, an autonomous regulation different from that applied in the rest of the country, aiming to correspond to the specificities of this Region, mainly its orography and forest cover.

As RAM possesses a forest heritage of high biogenetic and scientific value, having the Laurissilva Forest which boasts, among others, the UNESCO World Natural Heritage award, its protection, maintenance and expansion are imperative, where the activity assumes particular relevance developed by the CPF. This activity is developed in three distinct aspects; one as a Criminal Police Body, through policing, inspection and investigation within the scope of Forestry and Criminal legislation; another as a Civil Protection Agent, in the context of relief and surveillance and collaboration in combating rural/forest fires; and finally, as technicians from the Institute of Forests and Nature Conservation, IP-RAM (IFCN), through monitoring technical-scientific activities in the field, such as the collection of information and support for forestry research, he concludes the communiqué sent to the Editors.
