Labor Day: Portugal is the 4th EU country with the oldest workforce

Around half of Portuguese workers are between 44 and 64 years old, making it the fourth country in the European Union with the oldest workforce, according to data released by Pordata.

The data compiled by Pordata also reveals that Portugal is the second country in European Union (EU) to 27 Member States, after Spain, with fewer young people aged between 25 and 34 among the total number of workers, and the fourth country with the oldest workforce — since for every 100 workers under the age of 35 there are 99 over the age of 54 -, only surpassed by Bulgaria, Latvia and Italy.

On the other hand, Portugal surpassed the European target of, by 2030, at least 78% of the population between 20 and 64 years old being employedwith a value of 78.2%, above the EU average (75%).

O The country also reached the target of the percentage of young people between 15 and 29 years old who do not study or work not exceeding 9%. In 2023, it recorded a rate of 8.9%.

Portugal still ranks 13th among EU countries in terms of work accidentshaving reduced its occurrence by half in 10 years and standing at two work accidents per 100 thousand employees.

Portugal among the 10 countries with the lowest minimum and average wages in the EU

Portugal is the 5th country in the European Union with the lowest average salary, with the areas of agriculture and fisheries and accommodation and catering being the sectors where the least is earnedaccording to data released by Pordata.

In a portrait of the labor market in Portugal, Pordata indicates that both the national minimum wage and the Portuguese average wage are among the 10 lowest in the European Union.

The data reveals that Portugal is the 5th country with the lowest average salary, when considering the cost of living, only above Slovakia, Greece, Hungary and Bulgaria.

On the other hand, In Spain salaries are, on average, a third higher than in Portugal.

The Pordata also reveals that the average annual salary per worker (without purchasing power parity) in Portugal was the 10th lowest among EU countries, in 2022with salaries in the 10 countries that register the highest being at least twice as high as those in the 10 countries at the bottom (which includes Portugal).

Also the Portuguese minimum wage, When considered at purchasing power parity, it is among the 10 lowest of the 22 countries in the European Union with a minimum wage.

“In 20 years, Portugal was surpassed by Poland, Lithuania and Romania with regard to the national minimum wage (SMN)”, he says, adding that the national minimum wage is 26% lower than in Spain and 47% lower than in France.

The data reveals that the average monthly salary of employees in Portugal (including overtime, holiday and Christmas bonuses or bonuses) it was 1,368 euros in 2022.

“The national minimum wage is increasingly closer to the average wage. In 2002, the minimum wage corresponded to 43% of the average earnings and in 2022 this percentage had already risen to 52%”, he points out.

The Pordata photograph also indicates that the average salary in Portugal of workers in the accommodation and catering sector (873 euros) and agriculture and fisheries (916 euros) are among the lowest.

On the other hand, the sector of financial and insurance activities (1,705 euros), electricity, gas and water (2,243 euros) and international organizations and other extraterritorial institutions (3,156 euros) are those in which the average salary is highest.
