In this new episode of Na Terra dos Cacos we discuss the issue of reparations owed by Portugal to its former colonies for the crimes of colonialism, especially the slave trade, after statements by President Marcelo de Sousa, who said that Portugal has the “obligation” to “lead” the process of reparation to countries that were colonized, under penalty of losing the “capacity for dialogue” with them.

The theme is also continued in the interview with Portuguese-Angolan journalist Emídio Fernando, from whom PÚBLICO published a text on April 25th about how the Revolution took the leaders of the three liberation movements in Angola by surprise.

Almost 20 years ago, Emídio Fernando published a book he called The Last Goodbye Portuguesea History of Relations between Portugal and Angola from the Beginning of the Colonial War until independence.

Furthermore, António Rodrigues and Elísio Macamo talk about the critical situation in South Africa, 30 years after the first post-apartheid elections and less than a month before an election that promises to be divisive.
