50 years ago, the first May 1st in Liberdade was celebrated across the country. The working people took to the streets to continue celebrating the values of April and this day became known as Labor Day. This day is celebrated throughout the country and Guarda is no exception. This morning there is athletics at the Municipal Stadium, from 3 pm there will be the March for employment with rights, starting at Largo João de Almeida (next to Misericórdia) and arriving at Alameda de Santo André, and from 4:30 pm there is music with Carlos Pedro.
The coordinator of the União de Sindicatos da Guarda, José Pedro Branquinho, recalls that «we have to continue on the path of creating jobs with rights, creating better living conditions for everyone, but essentially for young people. We have been fighting for 8 hours of work for over 120 years and today we continue to work 8 hours, even with all the technological development. We must continue to fight for the reduction of working hours and the improvement of everyone’s living conditions, but essentially for young people who, currently, in the job market suffer most from precariousness and difficulties in renting a house and live with dignity”. And for all this, José Pedro Branquinho encourages people to “not miss it” and addresses everyone: “join us in front of Misericórdia da Guarda to Alameda de Santo André and make this day a great journey of struggle for remember the importance of Labor Day».
