As part of the PASO project – Archeology Project Without Obstacles, the Municipality of Esposende promoted, at the Social Center of JUM – Juventude Unida de Marinhas, a theatrical performance based on the adaptation of the short story “Escape to Egypt”, by Esposende writer Manuel de Bonaventura (1885-1973).

In this presentation to the JUM senior community, on the eve of the month that marks the tradition of “Maios” or “Maias”, the protagonists were the young users of APPACDM – Association of Parents and Friends of Mentally Disabled Citizens, from Esposende, who, in addition Assuming the role of actors in dramatizing the story, they were also involved in producing the scenery and props.

The PASO project has been implemented, since 2013, by the Municipality’s Cultural Heritage Service with various institutions that welcome people with disabilities, in a strategy to enhance the cultural heritage of the municipality’s territory, articulated with the goals of the Sustainable Development Goals ( SDG) of the UN 2030 Agenda.

The articulator of this project is Manuel de Boaventura, born in Vila Chã, recognized for the work he developed in the region in terms of education, in addition to his vast literary and journalistic legacy. He also stood out as an active personality in promoting knowledge and dissemination of the municipality’s Material and Intangible Heritage.

It was therefore agreed, in conjunction with the Manuel de Boaventura Municipal Library, to adapt “Escape to Egypt”, one of the short stories from the work “Stories told at the fireplace”, published in 1968, for theater.

After the presentation of the piece, everyone was invited to share memories about the experiences of the “Maios” and, together, they participated in a workshop to create broom wreaths.
