Mozambican Ambassador to the UN supports President of Portugal on colonial reparations

-

It was during a press conference at the UN headquarters in New York, Pedro Commissioner Afonso praised Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa’s stance, describing it as courageous and aware of the importance of justice in international relations, especially in relation to the colonial past. “Taking a position of reparation, of condemnation of the past, is the right thing to do”, stated the diplomat, emphasizing the need to face historical errors head on.

Asked about possible concrete measures by Portugal in relation to reparations, Afonso argued that recognizing past mistakes already represents an important first step. However, he expressed hope that more action can be taken in this regard. The ambassador also highlighted Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa’s courage in publicly recognizing that colonialism was a mistake, especially considering the history of his father, Baltazar Leite Rebelo de Sousa, who was colonial governor in Mozambique.

Supporting the Portuguese president’s statements, Pedro Commissioner Afonso encouraged all Portuguese to follow the same example, recognizing the damage caused by colonialism and slavery. “There is a lot of courage in saying that colonialism and slavery were a mistake. So, we encourage all Portuguese people to do the same”, said the diplomat, who also served as Mozambique’s ambassador to Portugal.

Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa’s statements on the issue of colonial reparations have generated controversy, with some criticisms being raised. However, the Portuguese president recently reiterated, during a visit to Cape Verde, Portugal’s commitment to the former colonies, highlighting the growing cooperation between the countries.
