The Vila Nova de Cerveira City Council formalized, this Monday, a collaboration protocol with the Pole of Innovation in Polymer Engineering (PIEP) for the creation of an Innovation Center.

The new space will be located in the building adjacent to the Health Center (formerly Galaecia), which will house, in addition to the Cerveira Innovation Center, specialized training, municipal social services and social security.

“With such a vigorous Industrial Zone, corroborated by the most recent CCDR-N indicators that place Vila Nova de Cerveira as the 15th most exporting municipality in the North Region, among the 86 municipalities, the objective is not to attract more labor-intensive Industry , as the existing one is already sufficient, but first attract specialized investment, in the laboratory and research aspects”, says Rui Teixeira, Mayor of the City Council.

Rui Teixeira explains that this partnership with the University of Minho “is a first step towards the creation of the desired and necessary Cerveira Innovation Center, in order to enhance the capacity to create knowledge, based on the training of more qualified human resources, reinforcing technological intensity in the production of goods and services aimed at global value chains and bringing the scientific and technological system closer to economic, social and creative activities”.

The protocol results from the effort and commitment of the Vila Nova de Cerveira City Council to align the offer with the needs of different actors, promoting cooperative and interdisciplinary innovation, as well as contributing to strengthening the competitiveness of companies and, consequently, to the development socioeconomic status of the municipality and the region in the field of product development, business models, systems, services and innovative polymer-based solutions with a multi-sectoral scope.

The specific area of the Pole of Innovation in Polymer Engineering (PIEP) aims to highlight the regional endogenous capacity to respond, in a timely manner, to trends in the plastics and composites sector and specific innovation challenges, promoting the participation of companies in research projects , national and European development and innovation, and helping to qualify human resources in polymer engineering at companies.

It also aims to promote a culture of sustainable development and circular economy in environmental, sociological and economic vectors, with a particular focus on the use of national raw materials and endogenous resources.

This protocol will be in force for a period of three years and may be automatically renewed for successive annual periods.
