This is data obtained by Jornal de Notícias (JN), which states that the discounts implemented on ex-scut motorway tolls, in July 2021, represented a loss of revenue for Infraestruturas de Portugal (IP) in the order of 229.6 million euros, until December 2023. However, according to its reports and accounts, the company shows that total revenue from tolls, across the entire motorway network, has increased.
This situation is caused by the fact that discounts on tolls have increased traffic and the numbers already exceed the pre-pandemic season.
According to JN, IP’s 2022 report and accounts reveal that, in that year, 364 million euros were charged – that is, an increase of 8.1%, compared to 337 million in 2021. The document that analyzes the accounts 2023 shows that, last year, revenues rose again, reaching 404.1 million – 11% more than the previous year.
According to IP, the discounts on ex-scut have caused an increase in traffic on the highways where they were applied, which is highlighted in the 2022 Report and Accounts, where they state that the increase was “probably leveraged by the effect of the price reduction itself, as a stimulus to circulation”.
Remember that the topic of tolls will be discussed today in the Assembly of the Republic, and a proposal by the PS, the BE and the PCP for the elimination of fees in some of the ex-scuts could be considered.
