The Braga Local Health Unit will carry out free skin cancer screenings on May 8, with the aim of “raising awareness among the population of the importance of early detection of this disease”.

Who are screenings for?Skin cancer prevention measures

The initiative, promoted by the Dermatology Service of ULS de Braga and which takes place within the scope of European Melanoma Day, aims to “raise awareness about the care to be taken on a daily basis and the crucial role of early diagnosis in the successful treatment of melanoma, the most aggressive type of skin cancer, among other types of skin cancer”.

“Melanoma is the most serious type of skin cancer, but it can be stopped if detected early. This screening is an opportunity to raise awareness about the primary prevention of melanoma, which can be achieved through simple but effective measures, such as adequate sun protection”, explains Celeste Brito, cited in a statement.

And he added: “It is important that everyone is aware of any changes in their skin and that they consult their Family Doctor or a Dermatologist if they notice anything suspicious.”

The screenings will take place between 09:00 and 13:00, on May 8th, at the facilities of the Dermatology Service of Braga Hospital.

Participation is free, but prior registration is mandatory and can be done by calling 253 027 381 (available on weekdays, from the 3rd to the 7th of May, from 9:00 am to 1:00 pm and from 2:00 pm to 4:00 pm :00).

Who are the screenings for?

The action is aimed at groups at risk for developing melanoma, namely people with fair skin, red or blond hair, people with difficulty tanning, who have a family history of melanoma, a history of sunburn, especially in childhood, and for anyone who has irregular signs on the skin and in traumatic areas, such as the scalp, lips, palms and soles.

Skin cancer prevention measures

In addition to participating in the screening, Celeste Brito highlights the importance of adopting sun protection measures in everyday life, such as:

  • Avoid excessive sun exposure, especially between 10:00 and 16:00;
  • Wear a wide-brimmed hat and sunglasses with UV protection;
  • Wear clothes that cover the skin, opting for dark colors and fabrics with UV protection;
  • Apply sunscreen with a high protection factor (SPF) 30 or higher, at least 30 minutes before sun exposure and reapplying every two hours, or more frequently, in case of excessive sweating or contact with water;
  • Do not use solariums (even to prepare your skin for the bathing season).
