The youth series “Rebelde Way”, which debuted on SIC in 2008, arrived on OPTO, the streaming platform of the Paço de Arcos station, on April 29th. To MAGG, Nelson Antunes, who gives life to Manuel Guerreiro and is one of the protagonists along with Pedro Silva Lobo (Tiago Barroso), Lisa Scott (Joana Alvarenga) and Mia Rossi (Joana Anes), tells how he saw this new development and how the your life today.

Nelson Antunes, when he learned that “Morangos com Açúcar” would return, was “sure that, eventually, the ‘Rebelde’ could only return”. “Since I made ‘Rebelde Way’ I’ve never heard of it, even though I’m not a person who pays attention to Portuguese television because I don’t see a project that resembles either ‘Rebelde’ or the target that ‘Rebelde’ aimed at when it debuted. Therefore, for me, it was clear that sooner or later, logically, this would have to happen”, he says.

With the news that the youth series would be shown on OPTO, “people went completely crazy”. “It was expected, because there was supposed to be a second series and there wasn’t. We, at the time, were at the top of sales since ‘Rebelde’ debuted until it disappeared and, therefore, people were waiting for a tour that didn’t happen. The feedback I’ve also had from my fellow protagonists is that people want – and our inbox is clogged with messages and requests – a second season and RBL [banda da série] on the road, because it was something that marked a generation and to this day I don’t remember any project that had our impact”he says, adding that he would also like there to be a second season of “Rebelde Way”, since “the fans want it”.

Nelson Antunes presented himself to the public in the talent competition “Família Superstar”, in 2007, on SIC, and a week later he was cast for the youth series. Most of the cast of “Rebelde Way” was young, such as Inês Aires Pereira, Diogo Martins, Tomás Alves, Jani Zhao, Ana Marta Ferreira and Tiago Aldeia, and the protagonist states that “it really looked like the Prestige school”, the upper-class boarding school where the characters studied. “There was really this youthful energy in the air. Even those who were older ended up incorporating, so to speak, a more youthful energy,” he recalls.

But, if there really was a second season, what direction would the series and the character Manuel Guerreiro take? “We would be musicians and singers, because RBL were so successful… Somehow, we could teach singing or Manuel could teach singing to some students at school as a subject, because he has a passion for motorbikes, he falls in love with Mia and the RBL are born. Each character had their own song, but I remember that at least there was a special affection from the public every time I sang ‘Marcas do Passado’ or ‘Chegou a Hora’, because they were the songs that everyone sang when Manel and Mia kissed”shoots.

“Manel could be a singing teacher, he could continue with his passion for motorbikes and RBL would be one of the most renowned bands, because when we left we had sales of over 120 thousand copies and we sold a lot of platinum. I don’t know what Mia would do, she probably wouldn’t work,” he jokes, adding that she didn’t keep in touch with the other protagonists and colleagues in the series, with the exception of actor Hélder Agapito.

“Our face still [está]very attached to the protagonists of the series”

Nelson Antunes considers that the fact that the series continued to air on television “for two or three years and always at different times” prevented his “continuity as an actor”. “It seems that my colleagues, especially the protagonists, also received this feedback from the producers being a little afraid of betting on us with our face still very much attached to the protagonists of the series”, he confesses. Furthermore, after having played a protagonist, Nelson also wanted what he did later “to be relevant”.

However, he does not hide that he fell in love with the acting profession and that he found “the story of playing with feelings very interesting”. “I always had the feeling that it could be a path to follow if the universe wanted to send me out there. We always say yes to listening to the proposals and then we decide. It would give me a lot of pleasure [voltar a representar]for sure”, he admits.

Nelson, who has been “nomadic in recent years” and currently lives in Gibraltar, decided to move to London after the series, where he stayed from 2011 to 2013. Later, he decided to “take care” of his future and invested in his profession , that of a sailor. “I have been alternating this with my passion for music. I have been in the studio developing an album, but I realized that I had things to say”, he revealed, adding that the album is called “Karma” and that he would like it to come out in 2024.

“I practically have the entire album written, half of it is already recorded and, whenever I can, I have recorded it”he says, adding that in Gibraltar there is “a live music project that, fortunately, is going very well”.

“The album, right now, is speaking to me and I’m trying to figure out exactly what my genre is. I think it’s pop and it also has some soul music themes, because that’s what characterizes me and it’s what I like to sing most. Basically, it addresses things that I have experienced. Many times they are things that I have experienced and other times I approach them in a way as if they were stories that I could have lived but didn’t, but I still want to talk about them, exactly to mark a certain point. statement. Basically, these are things I want to say about the form of melody and lyrics”, she adds.

For Nelson, music is “a channel”. “I don’t sit down and say, ‘Well, I need to make a song.’ No, I can’t do that. In three months I might not be able to write a song and in a week I might make an EP of six songs. It has to do with my state of mind, really,” she explains. In February this year, she released the song “Fé”, available on YouTube.
