This year, Europe Day takes place precisely one month before the European Elections which in Portugal take place on June 9th. To mark this, the Office of the European Parliament in Portugal, in collaboration with the Representation of the European Commission in Portugal and the Representative Office of the European Investment Bank Group in Portugal, organizes an event at Champalimaud Foundationin Lisbon, among the 5:30 pm and 8:00 pm of the day May 9. Lisbon City Council also joins in the celebration of Europe Day, with the Gaudeamus celebratory concert, directed by maestro António Victorino d’ Almeida. This show will take place at Capitolby 9 p.m.organized in collaboration with the Representation of the European Commission in Portugal.

The event at the Champalimaud Foundation, led by presenter Filomena Cautionalso counts on the participation of young people and organizations who, mobilized to discuss the importance of the European Union and its impact on citizens’ daily lives, come together in a celebration with live music, for Generation Orchestraand other symbolic moments, such as a European regatta, choreographed by the Lisbon Naval Cluband the lighting of Portuguese historical monuments, illustrated with the colors of the European flag.

The festivities also spread across various regions of the country. Angra do Heroísmo, Bragança, Caldas da Rainha, Coimbra, Faro, Guarda, Guimarães, Matosinhos, Montijo, Ponta Delgada, Portalegre, Porto de Mós, Tavira, Tomar, Torres Novas, Valongo, Vila Nova de Gaia and Viseu It was the Municipalities that have already joined the initiative to illuminate their most emblematic monuments with the European Union’s blue light. Throughout the month of May, suburban trains in Lisbon and Porto, and one of the traditional electric of the capital, circulate decorated with illustrations of Marta Nunes inspired by the European project and the call to vote in the European elections on June 9th.

Before the celebrations, starting at 3:30 pm, a seminar will also take place at the Champalimaud Foundation for Portuguese media outlets. After Pedro’s welcome Valente da SilvaHead of the European Parliament Office in Portugal, Sofia Moreira de SousaHead of the European Commission Representation in Portugal and João Fonseca SantosHead of the Representative Office of the European Investment Bank Group in Portugal, practical tools will be presented for journalistic coverage of the European elections, with the intervention of a member of National Elections Commissionwhich will address issues related to voting methods, and with sociologist and researcher Gustavo Cardoso which will explore the topic of disinformation and its interference in electoral processes.
