Twelve restaurants in Condeixa-a-Nova, as many as last year, will participate in the 11th Goat Week, which starts on Saturday (4) and runs until May 12.

For the City Council, which organizes this edition of the gastronomic festival, “Roasted goat from Condeixa, the best in Portugal!” is the motto for the next nine days in the county’s specialty houses.

With the Sabores de Condeixa – Goat Week initiative, this municipality in the district of Coimbra, led by Nuno Moita, wants to continue to value the quality of goat pastures, between the fertile lands of Baixo Mondego and the limestones of Serra de Sicó.

“Goat Week promotes our excellent gastronomic heritage, associated with escarpiada, the typical sweet of Condeixa”, said Nuno Moita to the Lusa agency.

In the 2023 edition, according to the mayor, the event brought “around 4,500 fans of lamb roasted in the oven in the Condeixa style” to the municipality.

Taking advantage of support from the municipality, which pays for 10 goats for each restaurant and 2,700 scarpiadas to be distributed among the 12 participating companies, a dose of the delicacy during the festival is sold for 18 euros, “a price below normal”, he added.

“We are very fond of the Goat Festival, which affects our economy”, in addition to “valuing the tradition and culture” of Condeixa, highlighted Nuno Moita.

Last year, diners paid 17.50 euros for a goat dish, a price that in this edition rises to 18 euros, including the drink, an escarpiada (local dessert made from bread dough, brown sugar and cinnamon) and a coffee .

At the end of each meal, “the customer votes for their favorite”, contributing to the choice of the winning restaurant, which will be awarded the “Golden Goat” prize.

Nuno Moita presented the award today to the restaurant O Filipe, in the town of Sebal, which, by public vote, won the “Cabrito de Ouro” for the tenth edition of the gastronomic and tourist initiative.

With another award from the 2023 festival, this one chosen by chef Flávio Silva, the Manjares d’Avó restaurant was awarded, replacing Sangardão. This time, the municipality’s investment in the event is around 21 thousand euros.
