In “A Pedra, a Mágoa”, the quarries are a metaphor. During the pandemic, Algarve native Daniel Matos read a news story about abandoned quarries and began to associate them with the idea of decomposition of the social idea of the concept of family. From this work, this new show was born, which premieres today, May 4th, starting at 9pm, at Teatro das Figuras, in Faro.

Basically, in this new choreographic object, the artist places the family at the heart of creation, exploring the hierarchical relationships that compose it.

«I’ve wanted to work on my parents for a long time now», begins by explaining Daniel Matos, in conversation with the Sul Informação.

Reading this news about abandoned quarries – associated with an invitation from choreographer Rui Horta, former director of “Espaço do Tempo”, in Montemor o Novo – gave wings to desire.

“I started to link this idea of abandoned quarries with my family. How did I associate these wounds in the landscape with my familiar place; how I saw them as excavation work, which I also wanted to develop within my family», explains the choreographer.

One of the objectives was also to evoke an almost mythological role that is associated with parenthood.

«In a way, putting them on a pedestal, you reach an age and start to deconstruct that: to have a more horizontal look», he adds.

The show, lasting about an hour, features thousands of frames per second accompanied by rvisit to the musical work “Prélude à l’après-midi d’un Faune”, by Claude Debussy, in a new version created by João Galante.

Daniel Matos’ parents will be at the premiere, in Faro, because this is a show that, in a way, «builds a story for them».

«It’s giving them back a story: it’s not a reconciliation; it’s just my way of seeing the world and sharing this way of seeing the world and making them feel embraced and also confronted,” he says.

For the choreographer, debuting in the Algarve also has another meaning.

The show is produced by CAMA AC, based in Lagos, with a team of interpreters made up of Lia Vohlgemuth, Joana Simões and Elia Pangaro and with artistic collaboration from João Catarino.

After the premiere of the show, it will be presented on the 18th of May, at the Cine Teatro de Pombal, and on the 25th, at the Centro Cultural de Lagos.

“The Stone, The Sorrow” is a co-production of Teatro das Figuras, Cine-Teatro Louletano, Casa Varela/Cine-Teatro de Pombal – Municipality of Pombal, Municipality of Lagos.
