The leader of the PS, Pedro Nuno Santos, agreed this Saturday to the hearing of the Attorney General of the Republic (PGR) in Parliament, as has happened in the past, but “not about specific cases”.

At the end of the PS National Commission meeting, which took place in Lisbon, Pedro Nuno Santos was questioned by journalists about whether the PGR should be heard in Parliament, after the president of the Assembly of the Republic argued that Lucília Gago should provide explanations to the deputies about the processes that provoked political crises.

“Yes. This is foreseen. Not about specific cases, but about the work that is done by the Public Ministry”, he defended.

Regarding the position on this issue defended the day before by the former prime minister, António Costa, the leader of the PS declined to speak for his former secretary general, but stated that he said “that he should not be heard about cases concrete, but rather within the framework of what is Parliament’s competence”.

“Parliament has already heard several times from different attorneys general of the Republic about the actions and priorities in matters of criminal investigation. This must be done very well in Parliament”, he recalled.

On Friday, speaking to CNN Portugal, António Costa said that “it doesn’t make sense” for the discussion on Operation Influencer to take place in the Assembly of the Republic.

“I would make a distinction. First, about the activity of the Public Prosecutor’s Office, which has to provide information. I believe, in fact, that the law already provides for an annual report that is presented to the Assembly of the Republic and the Assembly of the Republic is the one that you will decide how you appreciate it,” he said.

According to Costa, “whether the Assembly of the Republic discusses the report in depth or without depth, listening to the attorney general or not listening to the attorney general, that is a matter within the competence of the Assembly of the Republic.”

“Secondly, regarding specific processes that are ongoing, I think that the proper place for assessment is in the courts and it is in the courts that they should be assessed and not in a political entity”, he also said.

When the idea was defended by Aguiar-Branco, on the eve of the 25th of April, BE, PCP, Livre and PAN agreed with this PGR hearing in Parliament on the role of the Public Ministry, insisting on the need for explanations, a hypothesis that Chega considered inappropriate .
