The event takes place on June 10th at the “O Mundo Fantástico da Sardinha Portuguesa” store – opened last year in the heart of Times Square, one of the most visited tourist attractions in the United States -, and will have as a special guest the state governor of New Jersey, Phil Murphy.

“The invitation to Phil Murphy, which was promptly accepted, had a symbolic purpose: the state of New Jersey brings together one of the largest Portuguese-speaking and Portuguese-descendant communities on American soil, and the governor, for this reason, is a distinguished representative of the large Portuguese community in United States”, explained The Value of Time, in a press release.

The Portuguese Government will be represented by the Secretary of State for Tourism, Pedro Machado.

The political representatives will also be joined by members of the Portuguese-American community.

During the event, a work of art representative of Portuguese culture will be presented: a tapestry measuring almost three meters high, entirely hand-embroidered in Arraiolos stitch, using exclusively wool from Bordaleira sheep from Serra da Estrela.

“Illustrating a stick carrying tin cans that reveal the flag of each of the 50 North American states, this tapestry will be permanently on display in the store as a landmark of Portuguese-speaking culture, the space functioning as an emotional embassy of Portugal from the June 10th in homage to the country, the Portuguese and the Portuguese presence throughout the world”, the statement said.

“With this symbolic act marked on purpose on the Day of Portugal, Camões and the Portuguese Communities in what is considered the center of the world, Times Square, the Group reaffirms the cultural richness of its country with elevation, highlighting a modern Portugal that has Much has come out of the shadows, shaped by sustainability and innovation, proud of its history and prepared for the future”, concluded O Valor do Tempo.

Several Portuguese communities in the United States are already preparing Portugal Day celebrations, which in New York include the Governador Mario M. Cuomo bridge, the longest in the state, which will be illuminated again this year with the colors of the national flag.

As happened last year, the initiative also came from the association ‘New York Portuguese American Leadership Conference’ (NYPALC) and is scheduled for June 22, with a picnic with the community.
