The public presentation of the applications selected in the 1st phase of the “Three Minutes of Thesis (3MT-UAlg)” competition will take place on May 11th, at 2:30 pm, in the 1.5 amphitheater of the Penha Campus Pedagogical Complex. 25 candidates were selected, out of the 53 who applied for the competition.

Remember that “3MT-UAlg” was created with the aim of stimulating science communication skills of doctoral students and future scientists and, simultaneously, promoting scientific culture and interdisciplinarity, allowing non-specialist audiences access to the most recent research produced at UAlg.

Originally created by the University of Queensland, in Australia, this academic competition, which UAlg now joins, is aimed at all students enrolled in a doctoral study cycle and takes place through an oral presentation lasting a maximum of three minutes using a single slide, about the importance and impact of the candidate’s research.

3MT-UAlg was divided into two distinct phases, the first being the selection phase, in which candidates submitted a video of their communication lasting a maximum of three minutes and a single-slide PDF document. In this second phase, which takes place on May 11th, the finalists will present their communication orally to the jury and the public.

The applications presented covered the following areas: Social Sciences; Arts and Humanities; Medical and Health Sciences; Engineering and Technologies; and Natural Sciences.

In this first edition, the jury is made up of UAlg professors Bruno Silva (Higher School of Education and Communication), Jorge Semião (Higher Institute of Engineering), Leonor Cancela (Faculty of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences), Nuno Bicho (Rector), Margarida Castro (Faculty of Science and Technology), Marisol Correia (Higher School of Hotel and Tourism Management), and the Observador journalist, Vera Novais.

This year’s winner of 3MT-UAlg will receive a cash prize worth 4000 euros and the candidate who wins second place will receive 2000 euros.
