The European Commission proposed this Monday the end of the procedure opened against Poland for disrespecting European Union (EU) values, including the rule of law, by recognizing the country’s “hard work and efforts” after six years.

“Today marks a new chapter for Poland. After more than six years, we believe that the procedure under Article 7 [do Tratado da UE, acionado perante ameaças sistémicas nos países da UE ao nível do Estado de direito] can be closed”, announced the president of the community executive, Ursula von der Leyen, in a post on the social network X.

Stressing that this “is the result of Poland’s hard work and efforts to make certain reforms”, the leader of the European Commission congratulates the Prime Minister, Donald Tusk, and his government, which has been in office since December 2023 and succeeded to more than eight years of ultra-conservative power, for “this important advance”.

In a statement, Brussels then states that, after completing its analysis, it intends to close the case on the rule of law in Poland in the context of the procedure provided for in Article 7(1) of the EU Treaty, arguing that ” There is no longer a clear risk of serious breach.”

“Poland has launched a series of legislative and non-legislative measures to address concerns regarding the independence of the judiciary, recognized the primacy of EU law and committed to implementing all rulings of the Court of Justice of the European Union and the Court European Union of Human Rights related to the rule of law, including judicial independence”, lists the institution.

Brussels proposes this assessment to the Council (at the level of Member States) and Parliament to close the case that dates back to the end of 2017.
