The parliamentary leader of the Left Bloc, Fabian Figueiredo, defended this Monday that it is possible to “put Portugal on the path of good environmental examples”, announcing a set of bills, including the anticipation of the carbon neutrality target to 2045 , and that the party will also propose a ban on transfers to and from offshoreswhereas “the most effective way to combat corruption is to end its main maternity ward, the place where it feeds most, the offshores“.

BE will propose a ban on transfers to and from offshores, the extension of declaratory obligations to members of ministerial offices and random inspections, as a way of combating corruption. These measures concern three bills that will be presented in parliament and were announced by BE’s parliamentary leader in the Assembly of the Republic, Fabian Figueiredo, at the party’s parliamentary days in Madeira.

In a press conference at the Legislative Assembly of Madeira, Fabian Figueiredo argued that “the most effective way to combat corruption is to put an end to its main maternity ward, the place where it feeds most, the offshores“. “Much of the right wing that has a discourse about fighting corruption, in practice does not want to change anything substantial”, he argued.

In this sense, the party will propose a ban on “transfers to and from offshores“, reinforcing that “they are factors of inequality and the promotion of corruption.” “Furthermore, we also want to ensure that all companies operating in offshores cannot have public contracts or benefit from public support”, he added, challenging “all parties that want to effectively combat corruption” to approve this bill.

BE wants, on the other hand, “to ensure that, as happens with several other public positions, the political staff of the ministries also have declaratory obligations with the transparency entity”, highlighted the blocker. Fabian Figueiredo also announced that the party will propose “that at least 5% of declarations be randomly verified every year and that this can be done this year”. “We think that, because a public office holder has a greater obligation because he is the one who manages everyone’s assets, […] it must, once and for all, guarantee that all unjustified enrichment, carried out illegally, is taxed at 100%”.

In terms of visas goldwhich “have been the center of several controversies”, Fabian Figueiredo argued that they were awarded in a “non-transparent manner”, recommending an audit of the over 1600 visas issued between 2012 and 2023. The Bloc’s deputies will present a draft resolution to ” that all visa beneficiaries are identified and classified gold“.

The blockers will also recommend carrying out “an audit of all contracting of military services and goods by the Ministry of Defense between 2015 and today”, taking into account a “set of cases in which there has been a lack of transparency”.

Bloc wants to bring forward the goal of carbon neutrality to 2045

The Left Bloc began the parliamentary days with a visit to Praia Formosa, next to which two real estate projects are planned, one by the Pestana/CR7 Group and the other by the Welsh family. “We wanted to start these days here to, starting from a bad example of what private and public investment should not be, which is the case of this real estate project, which should not exist, to draw attention to the fact that it is possible to put Portugal on the path to good examples”, stated the BE parliamentary leader, accompanied by the BE coordinator, Mariana Mortáguaby the deputies to the Assembly of the Republic and the regional deputy, Roberto Almada, speaking to journalists, reinforcing that “Portugal, the Autonomous Region of Madeira, should not be seen as pieces of planted land by the sea, always available to be pirated by financial, real estate and extractive gluttony”.

“Portugal can and must have a green and blue economy, which prepares itself for climate change, while at the same time generating qualified employment. This implies clear rules. Therefore, in this roadmap to put Portugal as a good example in the fight against climate change, of intelligent public and private investment, we will propose that the goal of carbon neutrality be brought forward from 2050 to 2045”, he said.

The parliamentary leader of BE indicated, on the other hand, that the party will present a draft resolution so that 30% of the Portuguese marine area is protected by 2026, noting that this is an international commitment of the country that has not yet been transposed into law national. BE will also present a bill so that all car parks with at least 1500 square meters have half of their area covered by solar panels, highlighted the parliamentary leader. The blockers will also propose the end of projects of national interest, said Fabian Figueiredo, arguing that “they have served, above all, to promote luxury tourism and real estate projects that violate environmental criteria”.
