Jornal de Leiria – Coimbra moves towards creating a renewable energy community

-

The parish of Coimbrão, in the municipality of Leiria, will have a Renewable Energy Community.

The collaboration protocol was signed between Rewatt, from the SmartEnergy International Group, and that authority, now allowing the accession process for private individuals to begin.

With the investment and installation, by Rewatt, of photovoltaic plants on the roofs of companies located in the territory of the parish, it guarantees that it is possible to make part of the energy produced and not consumed available to neighbors, representing a cheaper, cleaner and more sustainable source of electricity. .

“Instead of surplus energy being injected into the grid and sold on the energy market, it is made available at a price of less than 50% of what most consumers currently pay. Despite there being a decrease in the average price in the market, An increase in network rates is already expected in June and, therefore, a general increase in energy costs from the middle of this year”, maintains Rewatt, in a statement.

One of the great advantages of the approach is the profitability of existing roofs and infrastructures instead of using land and forestry areas for energy production. “In practical terms, it is maximizing community collaboration at a local level.”

“The adoption of renewable energy sources and sharing them within the community, allows the reduction of the ecological footprint and carbon emissions, and promotes social equity, through the population’s access to green energy at a lower cost, thus combating energy poverty.”

The energy thus produced is distributed using the existing e-Redes infrastructure and distribution management is carried out by Rewatt, which assumes the role of Managing Entity for Collective Self-Consumption and the relationship between Production Units and Consumers.

Entering and leaving the Community is free and according to the company “the motivation for entering the community is for the consumer to obtain an advantage and therefore no one should feel obliged to be tied to a contract”.
