This Monday, CGTP-IN condemned the attacks against immigrants in Porto last weekend, rejecting any “intimidating” act against workers who seek Portugal for “a better life”.

“All citizens, regardless of their nationality or ethnic origin, have the same dignity and the same rights, which must be safeguarded and defended in all circumstances, this type of event is unacceptable, full support must be provided to the victims and punished those responsible”, said CGTP-IN, in a statement.

In this sense, he condemned the attacks against immigrants that took place in the city of Porto in the early hours of Friday, which have already led to the arrest of one person, and expressed “solidarity with all immigrants who seek Portugal as a destination, in search of a better life “.

“We reject any intimidating and persecutory act against immigrant workers, combating phenomena of racism and xenophobia that lead to discrimination against immigrant workers”, he highlights.

In this sense, he guarantees that “intervention with immigrant workers will continue, calling for their organization in the trade unions that make up the CGTP-IN and mobilizing these workers to improve living and working conditions”.

In the early hours of Friday, several immigrants were attacked in three different locations in the city of Porto, with at least two of those attacked receiving assistance at Hospital de São João.

In one case, the attack took place at the home of 10 immigrants, on Rua do Bonfim, which was invaded by a group of 10 men.

Following the various attacks, six men were identified and one was arrested for possession of an illegal weapon, having been brought to court and placed in pre-trial detention.
