“O Government is in solidarity with the Brazilian people at this time of enormous difficulty caused by the terrible floods in the state of Rio Grande do Sul”, wrote the office of the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Paulo Rangel, in a message on the official account on the social network X (formerly Twitter) .

In the same message, the Portuguese government offered its condolences to President Lula da Silva and the governor of Rio Grande do Sul, Eduardo Leite, expressing Portugal’s “full support”.

At least 83 people died in the floods in southern Brazil, according to a new report released by the Civil Defense of Rio Grande do Sul in the middle of this afternoon.

According to Civil Defense, there are 276 injured and 111 people missing. The same body indicated that around 121,957 people are homeless and there are another 19,368 people housed in shelters.

The floods affected 850,422 people living in 345 of the state’s 496 municipalities which, according to local authorities, have recorded some type of problem caused by the rain since the beginning of last week.

Rio Grande do Sul, with a population of 11 million people, has been hit repeatedly in the last year by the climate phenomenon El Niño, which causes heavy rains in the south of the country.

The President of Brazil, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, traveled to Rio Grande do Sul on Sunday, his second visit to the region since the start of the floods, and promised that there will be no bureaucratic obstacles to sending aid.

The regional government of Rio Grande do Sul declared a state of calamity, a situation recognized by the central government.

In Porto Alegre, capital of Rio Grande do Sul, large areas of the central region are still flooded. The level of the Guaíba River, which passes through the city, is almost 2.3 meters above the flood level.

In 2023, three events occurred in June, September and November, causing 75 deaths in this Brazilian state.
