“Rota Azulejar” showcases the heritage of the city of Tondela on National Tile Day: Gazeta Rural

For the second year in a row, the Municipality of Tondela will mark National Tile Day, which is celebrated this Monday (May 6).

The anniversary will be celebrated with the creation of a “Tile Route in Tondela”, which will showcase part of the city’s tile heritage.

Two Arts classes from Molelos Secondary School from the 10th and 11th years of schooling will participate in the activity. The first “trip” through the tile compositions will take place at 10:15 am and the second will start at 3:00 pm.

The route will begin at the Municipal Archive, where you will appreciate the front panel, then it will continue to Rua General Humberto Delgado, where a set of panels from a private house will be highlighted.

Students will then see a panel of a house in Largo Anselmo Ferraz de Carvalho, then passing by the Tondela Professional School, which has relief tiles inside and outside the building, and a house on Rua Tomaz Ribeiro.

The route ends in the atrium of Tondela City Hall, where students can marvel at the panels painted by Pedro de Figueiredo.

In addition to the heritage walk and an explanation of the works visited, the initiative includes a brief historical and biographical note on some of its authors/ceramists, the history of Azulejo in Portugal, its manufacture and reference factories on national soil. . There will also be an explanation about Art Nouveau and its appearance in Portugal.

National Tile Day was established in 2017 with the aim of recognizing this national tradition and heritage, while reminding the population to value, care and preserve it.

The tile heritage of the city of Tondela is almost entirely part of the Art Nouveau movement. The city presents relevant examples of this artistic creation in the form of coating or partial decoration on the facades and interiors of buildings.
